General Mills

General Mills Employer Profile

With worldwide sales in excess of $7 billion, General Mills ranks among the largest consumer foods companies in the country, and in the world. Our employees work in plants and offices in almost every state and in Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, Europe and Asia.

General Mills holds a leadership position in the highly competitive food industry through innovative products and services, aggressive marketing and an ability to anticipate and meet consumer needs. Some of the nation’s best-known products are made by General Mills including: Cheerios, Wheaties, Total and Chex cereals; Betty Crocker desserts, cake mixes, frostings and main meal mixes such as Hamburger Helper; snack products such as Pop Secret microwave popcorn, Fruit Roll-Ups Nature Valley Granola Bars, and Chex Mix; Yoplait and Colombo yogurt; Bisquick; and Gold Medal flour.

Our goal is to be the clear innovation leader in every category and every market in which we compete. In fact, General Mills’s brands rank either number one or number two in virtually all of our major food categories. We look to our future as a highly focused consumer foods company with an exciting blueprint for growth and a total company commitment to building on this legacy of leadership. In support of these aggressive growth goals, we acquired three great new businesses in 1999: Lloyd’s Barbeque, ready-to-heat and eat refrigerated meat entrees; Farmhouse Foods, adding rice and pasta dishes to our Betty Crocker side dish business; and Gardetto’s snacks, a perfect complement to our growing Snacks selections.

The company’s growing international presence includes the joint venture with Nestle, Cereal Partners Worldwide, which now competes in more than 60 markets that total 75 percent of cereal consumption outside of North America. Snack Ventures Europe, our joint venture with PepsiCo, is the leading marketer of snack products in Europe. In addition, General Mills' foreign subsidiaries in Canada, Mexico and China allow for rapid growth in the some of the fastest emerging markets around the world.

At General Mills we believe that there is a strong linkage between diversity and achieving the company’s goal of being the innovative leader in every category in which we compete. This linkage, and the need for continued diversity progress, is embraced at the highest levels of the company’s management. CEO Steve Sanger commented, “In the rapidly changing markets in which General Mills competes…the diversity of our people…and therefore of our ideas…is a central determinant of our success. This is why valuing diversity and creating workplaces where people with diverse skills, perspectives and backgrounds can exercise leadership are corporate priorities at General Mills.”

General Mills is committed to diversity leadership. We have employee networks (Hispanic Network, Asian American Employee Network, South Asian American Network, Black Champions Network, American Indian Council, Gay and Lesbian Network and the Women’s Forum) that provide a support system and positive forum for development, information sharing and idea exchange on common issues of interest to members. We also have a corporate mentoring program designed to develop, motivate, and retain employees. In addition, General Mills is committed to establishing and growing successful business relationships with increasing numbers of qualified minority and women owned suppliers through our Supplier Diversity program.

Furthermore, it’s important to us to be championship citizens. That means helping make the communities we work in better places to live. General Mills is committed to the communities in which we do business. The General Mills statement of corporate values states: “We will have a significant positive impact in our communities. We will focus on specific projects where our efforts will make a difference through direct philanthropy, product donation, corporate social investment and through our own personal involvement in civic and community affairs.”

At General Mills we recognize that we all have different needs and we are committed to providing our employees with every opportunity to balance their work and personal life responsibilities. This requires flexibility, sensitivity to individual needs and policies and programs that help make our employees’ lives easier.

It is this commitment to our employees that has been noticed by others inside and outside our industry. General Mills has been recognized as a great place to work, receiving the following awards in the last several years:
