By doing so, GSK will deliver strong growth in today’s rapidly changing business environment. Headquartered in the UK, the new company is the industry leader in terms of market share, holding 6.9% of the world’s pharmaceutical market. GlaxoSmithKline is a leader in four major therapeutic areas: anti-infectives, Central Nervous System (CNS), respiratory and gastro-intestinal/metabolic. In addition, it is a leader in the increasingly important area of vaccines. The company also has a Consumer Healthcare portfolio comprising over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, oral care products and nutritional healthcare drinks, all of which are among the market leaders. GSK is among the top three companies worldwide in both OTC medicines and oral healthcare products, with ten oral healthcare and nutritional healthcare brands with sales of $100 million. The company has market leading products in analgesics, nicotine replacement therapy, gastro-intestinal and respiratory tract consumer medicines; and in nutritional, dermatology and natural wellness. Consequently, GSK has household name brands in 130 countries. In 1999, based on pro forma results, GSK had sales of £16.2 billion ($26.3 billion) and profit before tax of £4.7 billion ($7.6 billion). Pharmaceutical sales accounted for £13.7 billion ($22.2billion), 84 per cent of the total. Again on 1999 pro forma sales, GSK had five products with sales of over $1 billion and a total of 15 products with sales in excess of $500 million. The latter group represents over 60 per cent of GSK’s total pharmaceutical sales. Pro forma, GSK’s total annual investment in R&D was about £2.3 billion ($3.7 billion). The company has a total of 25 new chemical entities (NCEs) and 17 vaccines in clinical development (phase II/III or submitted for approval), of which 14 NCEs and seven vaccines are in late stage development (phase III or submitted for approval). GSK has one of the world’s largest sales and marketing operations in the industry, with about 43,000 sales and marketing personnel worldwide. These are among a total of more than 100,000 employees around the world. Heritage GlaxoSmithKline was formed by the merger of Glaxo Wellcome and SmithKline Beecham, a “merger of equals” that brought together two premier pharmaceutical companies, both of which had extensive pedigrees in healthcare and were pioneers in many areas of science and medicine. The path to today's leading research-based pharmaceutical company started with individual entrepreneurs of the 1800s. Their pioneering efforts laid the groundwork for growth in the different companies that, over the years, were to lead to today's GlaxoSmithKline.
